Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

– How did the talk affect you?

The most essential driver that the talk affected me is that Steve Jobs used a lot of his life experiences to indicate the point he wanted to deliver. He structured the contents into three stories. They are “connecting the dots”, “love and loss”, and “death”.
I have learned three points through the stories.
First of all, we can't connec
t the dots looking forward; we can only connect them looking backward. We have to trust in something — our gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.
Secondly, sometimes life hits us in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. The only way to do great work is to love what we do. If we haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”
Thirdly, don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out our own inner voice.

– How does this talk catch the listeners’ attention (or does it all)?

I think it is based on three reasons.
First of all, he told everyone he was going to share only three stories which made the audience pay more attention to the coming up information.
Second, he used three turning points in his life to frame everything he wanted to convey, which is concise and powerful.
The last point is he controlled the atmosphere of the venue, and let the audience follow his pace. Not only is every of his story is interesting but also he read the story very vividly and did enough cadence.

– Has the talk changed your mind about something? If so, explain how.

Yes! Especially his view of life in the third story!
After he was diagnosed with a tumor on his pancreas he realized that “What death is to threaten, death is to the switch. “
He said “Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent.”
That is true. People often lack the motivation and enthusiasm to reach their goals or plan at a very slow pace, thinking we still have a lot of time. Provided that we know we don't have much time left, only then can we inspire our motivation and enthusiasm for our dreams.
I would like to share my favorite part of the whole speech!

– Has the talk left you with any questions?

Nope, I am totally inspired by Steve Jobs!
It can tell by those of my answers.
